Three Kinds of Insurance College-Bound Students Need

College is an important rite of passage for young adults, and many new college students will move out of town or even out of state to attend their school. Before saying goodbye to your college-bound student, it's important to have a discussion with them about money, financial responsibility, and insurance coverage. A majority of college students will have health insurance provided by their parent's existing policy, but health coverage is just one type of insurance coverage that they might need while starting this new chapter of life. Today's Aegis blog post looks at three other kinds of personal insurance coverage many college-bound students will need in order to be protected while in school.

Auto Insurance

For a number of college students, having a vehicle is essential in order to get to class, drive to a store or off-campus job, or to go home to visit with family and friends. However, students driving a vehicle whether in-state or out of state must have auto insurance coverage to protect against injuries or vehicle damages. Before leaving for college, be sure your college-bound student has the auto insurance coverage needed for their new location, and that they understand what to do in the event of a car accident or fender bender.

Property Coverage

Gone are the days when college students would show up to campus with just a couple of suitcases of clothes and some small personal items. Now, college students arrive on campus with a whole vehicle full of personal possessions, many of them high-ticket items such as smartphones, laptops, tablets, smart watches, televisions, and more. However, these personal items can easily be stolen or lost, so it's important to protect the value of these items by making sure they are covered under a parent's Homeowner's Policy, or a student's Renter's Insurance policy.

Life Insurance

College is a fun time of adventures and new experiences, but it can also be a time of unsafe decisions and dangerous horseplay. Unfortunately, every year hundreds of college students are killed in accidents related to unsafe driving, alcohol consumption, or drug use. In addition to health insurance, parents should also ensure that their college bound children have life insurance coverage in place in the event of a fatal accident or injury.

Wise decisions made during college years can make a positive impact in your child's life for years to come. Securing the right kind of personal insurance coverage is an important first step, and can help ensure that your college student has the protection and peace of mind needed to succeed during their college years.
