How Safe Is Your Restaurant?

Running a restaurant is a constant juggling act of several things: creating delicious dishes, attracting new customers, maintaining steady revenue, and managing expenses. One of the most important, but often overlooked, aspects of running a restaurant that will thrive is making sure that it's safe for both customers and employees. Today's Aegis blog post focuses on three areas of restaurant safety all owners should evaluate on a regular basis.

Kitchen Safety

Restaurant kitchens are where amazing dishes and desserts are created, but they can also be the one of the most dangerous areas in the entire building. Injuries and accidents can easily result from the use of ovens, fryers, grills, industrial mixers, knives, and other restaurant equipment, making it a risky place for kitchen workers and wait staff if there isn't good safety training in place. Employees should be encouraged to use all equipment safely, and older equipment should be repaired or replaced promptly to reduce possible workplace accidents.

Dining Area

The dining areas of restaurants should be appealing and comfortable, but also safe for customers and employees. Restaurants with carpeting should be regularly inspected to make sure there are no tears or bumps that could cause trips and falls, and hard floors should be thoroughly cleaned to prevent slips and injuries. In addition, any restaurant that has steps leading up or down into dining areas should ensure they are well lit and clearly marked.

Building Exterior

Finally, restaurant patrons and employees coming in and out of the building should also be just as safe outside as they are inside. Restaurant exteriors and parking lots should be brightly lit to prevent trips or falls, as well as to deter possible car burglaries or incidents onsite. In addition, restaurants may also consider adding video surveillance systems or security guard patrols for larger, high-traffic areas. Trees and landscaping should enhance the curb appeal of the restaurant, but should not reduce visibility for drivers or pedestrians.

Restaurant owners need to regularly inspect their restaurants to maintain employee and customer safety. These proactive steps can go a long way in creating a welcoming and safe environment where workers feel safe and patrons enjoy returning time and time again.
