Common Distractions For Teen Drivers, Part Two

In our previous blog post, we looked at the top two distractions for teen drivers and how these distractions can quickly prove dangerous and even deadly. Parents should be aware of these driving dangers and temptations for teen drivers so they can encourage and teach safer driving habits. In the second part of this blog series, we'll look at three other distractions teen drivers should avoid to keep themselves, their passengers, and other drivers safe on the road.

Talking On Cell Phones

Teen drivers are also routinely distracted by the use of cell phones, either trying to make a call, answer a call, or talking on the phone. Drivers are forced to look down and take their eyes off their road to find their cell phone, type in numbers, or adjust the volume if they're talking on a speakerphone. Parents can help discourage distracted driving by not calling their kids while they are driving, and also set good examples by not using their cell phones while driving also.  Parents should encourage their teen drivers to never make or answer calls while driving, reminding them that it's always safer to wait until you're no longer driving to make the call.

Taking Selfies

Some of the most popular apps for teens are Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat and Facebook, where many teens love to document every moment of their day with photos and selfies. Unfortunately, many teens try taking selfies or photos while driving, which is incredibly reckless and unsafe for themselves, their passengers and nearby drivers. Teen drivers taking selfies have no time to react if the car in front of them slams on their brakes, if a child or animal darts in front of their vehicle, or if they're veering into another lane.  It's important for parents to encourage their teen drivers to never snap photos while driving, no matter how cute their hair looks that day or how funny that moment was with their friends.

Eating or Drinking

Over the years, one thing that's always remained true of teens is that they love to eat and snack at all times of the day. Once they earn their license, they're often found making trips to drive-ins for a quick burger or coffee. Unfortunately, driving while eating can be very messy and can quickly turn dangerous, either because of spilled food, drinks or both. Teens can take their eyes off the road in an attempt to clean up or pick up what spilled over, causing them swerve into nearby lanes or overcorrect.  These incidents can lead to serious car accidents, major medical expenses, and even the loss of life.

Teenagers today face a wider variety of pressures and stress from family, friends, college choices, schoolwork, sports, teachers, dating, and even driving. However, teaching teens early the benefits of safe and responsible driving can help them make smarter choices in the future and reduce the stress and pressure of driving on Houston roadways.
