What Do Criminals See When They Look At Your Commercial Property?

Business owners will often spend a considerable amount of money to make their commercial property functional, easy to access, and welcoming to customers and visitors. However, criminals will look at a commercial property and notice very different things as they determine if a business would be a valuable and easy target. In today's Aegis blog post, we look at four things criminals may look for first when passing by your commercial property, and what security measures can help protect your business.

Lighting

First, criminals are far more likely to strike your commercial building or company vehicles at night, so they will notice if your building has poor lighting or dimly lit parking lots and garages. This makes it easier for them to enter, access, and exit your property undetected in the cover of night. In addition, poor property lighting can make it more difficult for eyewitnesses or victims to clearly identify a criminal or trespasser on the property.

Easy Access Through Doors or Windows

Another thing criminals may look for is easy access through doors and windows around the property. For example, if valuable merchandise is located very close to a glass door or window, it may make it more tempting for criminals to simply break the window or door for a quick grab. In addition, if doors or windows are older or aren't reinforced with strong locks, it can also make your business a more likely target.

Unsecured Property

Even if you have reinforced doors, windows, and locks, and ample lighting around the perimeter of the property, thieves may still be tempted if your business has unsecured property or valuables inside or outside. For example, if your restaurant has outdoor tables, chairs, or televisions that aren't secured at night, criminals can quickly load these onto trucks or vans. In addition, retail stores could be targeted if they keep merchandise outside (like grills and patio furniture) or display big-ticket items like designer handbags in high traffic areas.

Security Systems

Finally, criminals will always notice if there are security systems in place, particularly those with cameras around the outside of the parking lot. Thieves are often deterred by high-tech security systems since they can easily capture their likeness, clothing, distinguishing features, or vehicles, making them easier to identify for law enforcement.

If you're a business owner looking to improve safety on your commercial property, it may be worth it to evaluate your property to identify any security weaknesses and areas for safety improvement.
