With the holiday season in full swing, you'll likely see many homes and entire neighborhoods lit up and full of seasonal décor. Unfortunately, while some people see holiday home décor as a sign of fun and festive memories to come, others see it as an invitation or opportunity to steal valuables that could be inside. Home burglaries are always on the rise during the holidays, but homeowners can take proactive steps to reduce their chance of becoming burglary victims, protecting their property and themselves. Learn more about three of these steps in today's Aegis blog post.

Add Landscape Lighting

One of the best ways to deter burglars who might target your home or apartment is to keep it well lit, both inside and outside. Having the inside of your house or apartment well lit is always a good idea, since it can give the impression that someone is always home. Another way to make your property a less desirable target for criminals is to have landscape lighting installed around the perimeter of your home and property. It can make it more difficult for thieves or vandals to access or hide on your property, and can make it easier for homeowners or watchful neighbors to spot and identify potential thieves.  Even the addition of motion detector lights can help deter thieves from stealing inside your home, outside your home, or from your car or truck parked in the driveway.

Get Security Systems

In addition to providing immediate access to first responders, a security system can go a long way in protecting property and the people inside. Security systems can be as simple as an alarm triggered by a door or window when activated, or even camera systems that capture video and audio and stream it to homeowners remotely. These systems can scare away burglars, and also capture the faces and voices of people trespassing on your private property, which can assist law enforcement efforts to apprehend them.

Secure Doors and Windows

Front windows are often the focal point of home holiday décor, used to prominently display Christmas trees or other seasonal furnishings. They can also be used by burglars to peek inside and get an idea of how many valuables could be inside, such as televisions, computers, silverware, tablets, jewelry, art, gaming systems, and other big-ticket items. If you want to use your home or apartment's front window to display your Christmas tree or other holiday decorations, make sure to close the curtains or blinds when no one is home. Also, make sure doors and windows are not just closed, but also locked at all times.

While decorating your home or apartment for the holidays can be a fun and memorable tradition, it's important to not make your property a target for criminals looking to steal from you.
