Is Minimum Auto Insurance Coverage Really Keeping You Protected?

The state of Texas requires minimum amounts of auto insurance coverage in order to operate a vehicle in our state, which is liability coverage for property damage or bodily injury you may cause with your vehicle.  However, there is no one type of car accident. Some may be single-car accidents caused by a drowsy driver, while others may be multi-car pile-ups with many injured drivers and passengers.

Unfortunately, having just the bare minimum of auto insurance can leave Texas drivers in a financial bind, since there are many other types of auto accidents and incidents that can impact drivers, their passengers, and other drivers. In today's blog post, we'll discuss why having just the minimum amounts and types of auto coverage does not really keep Texas drivers protected, and why additional auto insurance coverage is necessary.

Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist Coverage

Although you might have great auto insurance coverage in the event of an accident or injury while driving, other drivers involved in an accident with you might not have the same kind of coverage. For example, if you're rear-ended by a driver with no insurance, or seriously injured by a driver with bare minimum insurance, you could be left covering repair or medical expenses out of your own pocket. However, you can protect yourself with Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist Coverage for bodily injury or property damage. These policies cover medical expenses or property damage if you're in an accident and the other driver at fault has little to no auto insurance coverage.

Collision Coverage

Another problem Texas drivers face when they just have bare minimum auto coverage is that it does not help cover repair costs when drivers damage their own cars during an accident. If you cause an accident and your vehicle has substantial damages, having bare minimum auto coverage means all repair costs would come out of pocket. However, Texas drivers can protect themselves with Collision coverage, which covers the cost of repairing or replacing their vehicle that's been damaged in an accident, whether with another car, a tree, pole, or other property.

Comprehensive Coverage

Finally, drivers with minimal auto insurance coverage can find themselves in a serious financial bind if their vehicle is vandalized, stolen, or damaged due to a fire or other non-collision accident. Repair or replacement costs would be the sole responsibility of the driver, regardless of the age or condition of the vehicle. Comprehensive Auto Insurance provides financial assistance for repairs or replacement costs when a vehicle is damaged or completely lost due to non-collision causes, like fire, theft, or vandalism.
